Picture That
The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York is hosting a new exhibition, until July 25, 2026, entitled, "Ideas of Africa: Portraiture and Political Imagination." The powerful exhibit, which features the work of luminaries like Seydou Keïta, Malick Sidibé, and Samuel Fosso, strives to move beyond the idea of photography as a mere record, and explores how the lens has now become a tool for authentic self-expression and self-determination. Inspired by V.Y. Mudimbe’s landmark text, the exhibit captures the visual and cultural "transatlantic call-and-response" between continental Africans and Africans in the diaspora.
